Capturing Precious Moments: Tips for Family Photo Sessions

Family Photo Session- Pittsburgh, PA

Family photo sessions are a cherished tradition, capturing moments frozen in time that we'll treasure for years to come. Whether it's the joy of a newborn, the laughter of children, or the bonds of a growing family, these snapshots hold immense sentimental value. However, preparing for a family photo session can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially with little ones in tow. But fear not! With a few simple tips, you can make the most of your session and create lasting memories to cherish.

1. Dress Comfortably, Look Fabulous

Selecting outfits for the family can be a fun opportunity to showcase your personalities while ensuring everyone feels comfortable. Opt for outfits that reflect your style but prioritize comfort. When you feel good, it shines through in the photos!

2. Embrace the Chaos

Let's face it – children have a mind of their own! Instead of stressing over perfect poses, embrace the spontaneity and unpredictability. Some of the most heartwarming moments are captured when kids are being themselves, even if it means a little chaos along the way.

3. Take a Deep Breath and Smile

The key to beautiful, natural-looking photos is relaxation. Take deep breaths, relax your shoulders, and let your smiles flow freely. Remember, these photos are about capturing your family's unique connection and love for each other.

4. Play and Engage

Children thrive when they're having fun, so come prepared to play and engage with them. Bring along their favorite toys or games to keep their spirits high and their smiles genuine. A playful atmosphere often results in the most authentic and memorable photos.

5. Enjoy the Moment

Above all, savor the experience of being together as a family. This photo session is not just about capturing images; it's about creating cherished memories that you'll look back on fondly for years to come. Enjoy the laughter, the hugs, and the special moments shared with your loved ones.

In conclusion, family photo sessions are about celebrating the love and connection that binds us together. By following these simple tips – dressing comfortably, embracing spontaneity, staying relaxed, playing and engaging with your children, and savoring the moment – you can make the most of your session and create timeless memories that will be treasured for generations.

So go ahead, smile big, laugh loud, and let your love shine through the lens! 📸✨

On-Location Family Photo Session- North Park- Pittsburgh

One of the best parts of my job is being able to freeze time for families and capture a quick glimpse of the uniqueness of a particular time in their lives. It is amazing watching newborns grow into chubby babies and babies grow into spunky toddlers and toddlers grow into curious on-the-go kids! I always feel so honored when families return to me to capture these special family memories.

If you love candid, natural, REAL family portraits as much as I do, contact me for more info on my on-location family sessions!

What to Wear for Your Fall Family Photography Session {north pittsburgh family photographer}

Pittsburgh Fall Photography Styling Guide- Jessi Ruscher Photography

My most asked question as a photographer:   What do we where for our family session??    The biggest thing to remember is that you don't necessarily need to match but you do need to coordinate.  For my own families fall photos I like to stick to a mix of neutrals and jewel tones (mustard yellow, burgundy, navy blue).  I like to dress one of my family members in a pattern such as a floral print or plaid.   After selecting the pattern item of clothing I base the rest of my family's outfits around that item of clothing. I typically stick with only one person in a pattern for a family of 4.  I love my 3.5-year old son in flannel so he usually gets the pattern shirt in our family!

Another thing to consider when choosing colors is what you will be doing with these photos.   Will you be printing them and framing them for your home?  If that is the case you might want to be mindful of what color schemes will coordinate with your home decor.

When planning outfits for your family please remember to where clothes you and your children are comfortable in.   When adults/kids are uncomfortable it will show in photos.   To capture joy and genuine moments of connection between family members I encourage you to play with your child, throw them up in the air, spin them around, or get down on their level for tickles/snuggles. Keep this in mind when choosing outfits.     Headbands/bows are adorable but if your 18-month old hates them, you might want to skip it.   If your 4-year old can't run and jump in dress shoes maybe look for another cute option that is a bit more functional.

Pinterest also has LOTS of awesome ideas for family photo outfits and color combinations.    These families below nailed their family portrait outfit selections!  Take a look.  Be inspired. :-)

I love the rich jewel tones this family picked for their fall session.  These colors stand out so well against the green background.  Another fun part of styling fall sessions is all of the layers and textures you can incorporate to create more visually appealing images.  I love using texture accents such as scarves, vests, jackets, boots, hats, simple jewelry, and accessories.   Blankets can also add lovely texture and pops of color.  During my sessions I provide vintage quilts, knit blankets, and plaid throws but if you have something else you would like to use let me know!

I love the layers and pops of bold color this family picked.  Look closely and notice mom's scarf/nails, little brother's socks, big brother's plaid shirt/pants, and dad's watch.  These red pops of color tie everyone together!  Little details like this can make a big difference.

Navy and burgundy are two of my favorite color choices for fall, they look lovely with a green or fall foliage background.    This family did an awesome job mixing neutrals, bold colors, and patterns.

Lovely fall jewel tones!
